Last Friday marked a milestone in our journey at Art By Light Photography, an Orlando-based photography studio specializing in portrait and wedding photography. We ventured into a new territory as we had the privilege of capturing the sparkle and joy of our first sweet 16 celebration. This wasn’t just any party; it was a symphony of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments at the Crystal Ballroom in Metro West, Florida.
The birthday girl, Danielle, was a picture of elegance. Though it was a last-minute booking, the connection was instant. The trust was already there, fortified by our previous assignment - shooting her sister's wedding. Her mother, Zaida, had seen our passion and expertise firsthand and was confident that we could capture the spirit of Danielle's big day just as we had done for her elder daughter.
The Crystal Ballroom, one of Orlando's premier event venues, was a sight to behold. The dominant hue of pink combined with the glimmer of crystals added a dash of sophistication to the jovial atmosphere. The carefully crafted pink drinks mirrored the party's vibrant theme and enhanced the overall aesthetic.
One of the evening's highlights was the poignant ceremony where Danielle's parents and sister participated in the sweet 16 traditions. The changing of her shoes, the presentation of her crown and flowers, and the gift of a ring from her stepfather were all heartfelt moments that we were privileged to capture.
Despite being new to sweet 16 photography, our commitment to capturing authentic moments remained steadfast. We navigated the challenges of unfamiliar traditions and unpredictable teenage dance moves with grace and patience, always ready to catch the spontaneous moments of joy.
Our equipment of choice for the night were two Canon R 6 cameras paired with the 28/70 f2 and 70-200 f2 lenses. For lighting, we used 2 ad100 lights to ensure each shot was perfectly illuminated. Among the multitude of shots we took, there were some of Danielle before the ceremony that stood out. These few moments of quiet anticipation allowed us to encapsulate the mix of excitement and maturity marking the transition from girlhood to womanhood.
This experience was indeed different from the weddings we usually shoot, but it was a refreshing change. It pushed us out of our comfort zone and allowed us to explore a different side of our photography skills.
